The ban on tobacco advertising in the press and on billboards in the United Kingdom will come into effect this Thursday.

The first evidence of a link between tobacco smoking and lung cancer was made in 1950.

Seven years later the Medical Research Council publicly confirmed that smoking was responsible for the increase in the disease.

Despite a ban on cigarette advertising on television being enforced in 1965, it wasn't until 1991 that pipe tobacco and cigar advertisements were prohibited from television.

The Government predicts the total ban will save 3000 lives a year and reduce NHS bills by millions.

The only reprieve is for Formula 1 and snooker which have been given three years until the restriction is enforced.

Unrepentant tobacco companies insist the ban won't stop people smoking.

They are spending millions in a last attempt to lure people to buy cigarettes before advertisements are stubbed out for good.
